This site is operated by Joseph Dituri. This policy explains what it collects, which is very little, and what happens to it.
What is collected
The only information you are asked to provide is what you type into the inquiry form and choose to send: your name, your email address, the kind of inquiry you are making, and whatever you write in the message.
There is no account to create, no newsletter signup on this site, and no field asking for anything beyond the above. Your IP address is not stored with your message. The site does also collect general information about how its pages are used, which is described under “Analytics and cookies” below.
What happens to it
An inquiry is saved on this website, and a copy is emailed to info@ibum.org where it is read and answered. Saving it on the site is what stops a message being lost to a spam filter. Both copies are kept as long as they are useful for answering you and for keeping a record of the conversation. Nothing is sold, rented, or shared with anyone for marketing, ever.
Analytics and cookies
This site uses Google Analytics to understand how the site is being used: which pages people read, how they found the site, and whether anything is broken or hard to reach. It is used to make the site better, not to work out who you are.
Google Analytics places small files called cookies in your browser. They are set by this site rather than by an advertising network, and they are used to tell one visit from another and to recognize a returning browser.
What is collected is general. It covers the pages you view and how long you spend on them, an approximate location worked out from your network connection (usually no closer than a city), the type of device and browser you are using, and the site or search that sent you here. It also covers a little of what you do once a page is open: how far down you scroll, clicks on links that lead away from this site, files you download, videos you start playing, and the fact that the inquiry form was started or sent.
That last one deserves a plain answer, because the inquiry form is where people write personal things. Google Analytics is told that the form was started and that it was sent, along with the form’s own identifier, which is a fixed part of the page rather than anything you typed. It is not told what you wrote. Your name, your email address, the kind of inquiry you selected, and the text of your message are not passed to Google and are not part of these reports. What is measured is that the form was used, not what was said in it.
This information is processed by Google on this site’s behalf, under Google’s own terms and privacy policy. This site does not use it to identify individual visitors, and it is not matched up with inquiry form messages to work out who read what. The settings that would let Google connect this browsing to your activity on other sites, or use it to target advertising, are turned off. The underlying records are set to be deleted after 14 months, after which only totals that no longer relate to any single visit remain.
If you would rather not be counted, there are several ways to opt out. Google publishes a browser add-on that turns Google Analytics off everywhere you browse, at https://tools.google.com/dlpage/gaoptout. Most browsers can also block or delete cookies, either for this site or in general, and many browsers block analytics scripts already. A visit made that way is simply not recorded, and nothing on this site stops working.
The typefaces are served from this site’s own server rather than from a font service, so loading a page does not tell a font company that you visited.
WordPress, which this site runs on, may also set a cookie if you leave a comment or sign in to an administrator account.
Video and links to other sites
Some pages show a still image and a play button for a video hosted on YouTube. Loading that still image involves a request to Google’s image servers. If you press play, the video loads from YouTube and Google’s own privacy policy governs what happens from that point.
Links to booksellers, journals, universities and other organizations lead to sites this one does not control. Their policies apply once you follow the link.
Children
Much of this site is written for students, and teachers and parents are welcome to use it. The site does not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13. The inquiry form is for adults: teachers, parents, organizers and professional contacts. Students should not send personal information through it.
If you believe a child has sent personal information through this site, write to info@ibum.org and it will be deleted.
Seeing or deleting what you sent
Write to info@ibum.org and ask. You can ask what has been kept, ask for a correction, or ask for it to be deleted, and it will be.
Security, honestly stated
Inquiries travel over an encrypted connection and are held in ordinary business email. That is reasonable care for the kind of information involved. It is not a system built for confidential health information, so please do not send medical details, records, or anything else sensitive through the inquiry form.
Changes
If this site starts doing something different, such as adding analytics or an email list, this page will be updated before that happens, and the date below will change.
